Women Smoking

KOLKATA...The City of Joy has more smokers than other metros but they smoke less at home compared to those in other parts of the country. A study conducted by general insurance company ICICI Lombard through GFK Mode has revealed that 97% of smokers in Kolkata smoke more than 6.6 cigarettes a day compared to a national average of five. However, owing to family pressure and self-restriction, smokers here tend to do it outside their residence. Almost 34% of the respondents in Kolkata have said that they do not smoke at the place of stay while the national average is only 16%. In Delhi, this figure is zero while in Mumbai it is 19%.

"This must be because of stringent family restrictions and tradition of not smoking in front of elderly people in the family," said Amit Bhandari, VP (health underwriting & claims), ICICI Lombard. The sample size of for the study in Kolkata was 225 across all age groups.

The city-based smokers are also ahead of the national average in terms of showing willingness to quit smoking. According to Bhandari, the smokers in the city also have a habit to take steps to quit smoking though unsuccessfully, due to lack of will power most of the times. Nationally, 28% of smokers have said that they took steps to quit smoking while in Kolkata it is 32%.
